Martin
Knowles and Richard Jones of Garstang Running Club showed their
versatility and stamina, if not ability, when completing the Blackpool
Half Marathon and the Mid Lancs Cross Country event in successive
weeks. The Great North Western Half Marathon, to give it its official
title attracted 1186 competitors including 6 from the club. Martin was
first back in 160th place in 1.31.04 followed by Richard in 256th place
in 1.35.25, Greg Hunter 271st in 1.36.25, Tim Warner 295th in 1.37.21,
Philippa Olive 618th in 1.49.28 and Julie Graham 709th in 1.53.10.
At a less muddy than usual Witton Park Blackburn Mike Whyatt led the
club’s cross country team home in 7th place and 2nd MV40 followed
by Craig Menzies 90th, Tony Pritchard 98th, Phil Cornall 113th, Martin
Knowles 118th, Geoff Lyons 119th, Richard Jones 124th, Geoff Lund,
running in spikes – were they a present from the person who
borrowed his cross country shoes at the last event – 154th and
Phil Dixon 156th of the 176 competitors.
The heart of the Lake District – so no hills then – was the
location for the Haweswater Half Marathon with Tim Warner leading the
club’s runners home in 143th place in 1.39.18 followed by
Philippa Olive 297th in 1.54.22, Denise Hughes 333rd in 1.58.49, Phil
Dixon 336th in 1.59.15 and Claire Gillham, running her second race of
the year – is this rekindled enthusiasm - 409th of the 419
finishers in 2.19.15.
