Dave Neilands reports . . . .

Plenty of variety was available to Garstang Running Club members over one recent weekend. On the Saturday it was the Dentdale Run, 14.3 miles of undulations on a figure of eight course starting and finishing in the tiny village of Dent near Sedbergh. Four club members made the trip with Richard Roberts first back for the club in 40th place in 1 hour 34.26 minutes. Richard was followed by Richard Jones (stepping up his London Marathon training) 130th in 1.47.49, Frank Miller 259th in 2.00.48 and Julie Graham 347th in 2.12.46.

At 448 finishers Dent had the biggest field of the weekend, however the following day 243 turned out for the 6 mile Roddlesworth Roller an off road race at Abbey Village near Chorley. Dave Barraclough was the clubs only representative, finishing 84th in 42.55 minutes.

The Blackpool Stanley Park 10k attracted 264 entrants including Denise Hughes 150th in 54.43 and Omar Aboo 204th in a frustrating one hour and 12 elusive seconds. The longest race of the weekend and an acknowledged London Marathon “trial” was the Trimpell 20 miler a flat course near Morecambe. Philippa Olive, the clubs other marathon entrant, finished 220th in 2.56.58, with Tim Warner 92nd in 2.27.34 and Helen Vinnicombe helping dad Malcolm around the course finishing 174th and 175th in 2.47.02 with the 291st and final weary competitor finishing in 4.08.36.

On an earlier weekend a somewhat further a field Jane Holt finished 113th in a field of 159 at Cheadle 5 Spring road race were the conditions were decidedly un spring like with wind and rain accompanying the runners over the Staffordshire Moorlands
