Cross Country Season 2006-7
The Garstang Running Club Men’s Cross-Country Team has just
completed a gruelling yet enjoyable season of shifting mud during the
2006-7 season with mixed success. The teams competed in the
Mid-Lancashire Cross-Country League and the Lancashire County
Championship.
The 6 Mid-Lancashire races took place at a variety of locations.
All except one were based in Lancashire, the exception being
Liverpool. Mike Whyatt achieved outstanding individual
success; he won the veteran 40 championship outright by a wide margin,
and was equal 1st in the overall mens’ championship but finished
2nd on the tie-breaker. Not bad for an old man. Finally, he
was selected to represent Lancashire at the Inter-Counties
championship. Unfortunately, he was not able to run in the latter
due to injury. These are an improvement over last year’s
best ever showing for a club member, also achieved by Mike, and set new
best individual performances in cross-country since the club started.
As a team, the season has been disappointing. Last season both
the Senior and the Veteran 40 mens’ teams were delighted to be
promoted. This year, both have been relegated. Whilst club
members have competed in every race, the club has only managed to field
a full Senior Team in 2 races and a Veteran 40 Team in 3.
Other notable individual performances were had by Tony Pritchard who competed in every race and was rewarded with 18th Veteran 50 and 62nd overall, Phil Cornall who was 66th overall and Richard Jones who was 93rd overall. Other competitors included Pete Gelderd, Geoff Lyons, Dave Barraclough, Alan Hartley and Richard Roberts, with special guest appearances by Tim Warner and John Pitchford. A total of 463 individual runners participated in the league during the season.
Garstang Running Club prides itself on catering
for those who run for pleasure as well as those who want to run
competitively. Anybody who wants to give it a go, no matter how
good you are, is welcome. Interested? Then come along
to our Tuesday and Thursday meetings at 1900 hrs at the Garstang
Outdoor Sports and Social Club and give it a go.
