Three marathons, three different countries, two different
continents, Garstang Running Club members certainly get about. It
was London for Richard Jones and Phillipa Olive
however the unusually hot temperatures meant that objectives changed
from hopes of a really good time to “getting round in one
piece”. Richard completed the course in 3 hours 40
minutes and Phillipa in 4 hours 28 minutes and whilst both were
slightly disappointed with their times they were excellent times
considering the conditions. Not surprisingly heat was not a
problem at the Lochaber Marathon
near Fort William in Scotland where the drizzly conditions were
excellent for marathon running if not for spectating.
Approximately 36000 completed the course in London, however a
“select” number of 402 completed Lochaber including Tim Warner in 3 hours 32 and Malcolm Vinnicombe who, apart from closing rapidly on Tim at the finish also won the MV60 prize completing the course in 3 hours 39 minutes.
Helen Vinnicombe went to Australia for her marathon and heat was again a problem at the Canberra
marathon, but despite being “trumped” by her Dad’s
excellent performance at Lochaber she completed in 3 hours 51. Greg Hunter meanwhile
took part in the 10k event and no doubt finished somewhat dizzy as the
course involved five “loops” but despite the 1.2 mile laps
he finished in 44.30 minutes
