Dave Neilands reports . . . .

To have three members in the first 50 of a race which drew 714 finishers was a first for Garstang Running Club, and if Al Hartley had put his foot down it would have been four!  The race in question was the Preston 10k with Mike Whyatt finishing 5th and first MV40 in 33.25 minutes followed by Richard Roberts 23rd in 37.24, Tony Pritchard 37th in 39.05 and the aforementioned Al 53rd in 40.50 and last for the club, yet beating 339 other runners (mostly younger than him – they all are nowadays) was Pete Gelderd in 52.04 minutes.

The Carnforth 20 Barriers has, as the name implies barriers “blocking” the 5.5 mile course.  Showing off their “mountain goat” skills were Richard “five bar gate” Jones who finished 42nd, Dave “four bar gate” Heslop 56th and Jane Holt who finished 89th in a field of 144.  Three days earlier Jane had set as personal best in the Stone 10k in Staffordshire with a time of 47.54 minutes which gave her 177th place out 331 competitors
