Dave Neilands reports . . . .

Over time runners have invented many ways in which to judge how fast, or more usually how slowly they are running.  At the Cliviger 6 near Burnley Garstang Running Club’s Richard Jones may have invented another “measurement” in that he failed to out sprint a wasp and got a sting on his face for his lack of sprinting ability.  Richard Roberts lead the club home in 17th place in 37.59 minutes with Richard buzzing home in 52nd place in 42.49 leaving a further 76 runners toiling in his wake on a very hot day.

Slow runners was not the reminder needed to mention that on the same day Pete Gelderd finished 63rd out of 105 competitors at the Norbreck Castle 10K at Blackpool in 54.36 minutes.  Also on the same day Al Hartley and Mike Hall represented the club at the Wagon & Horses 10 miler at Lancaster with Al finishing 26th in 1.09.12 and Mike 131st in 1.28.43 and the last of the 190 competitors finishing in 1.57.12.

Soapbox time – 423 runners contested the three races which were within 30 miles of each other and the next week there were no races whatsoever in the North West.  Race planners and organizers need to get their heads together as races are taking each others revenue unnecessarily!

The previous week Al, Richard J and Mike were joined by Tim Warner at the Chernobyl Challenge 10K at Preston with Al finishing 46th in 40.25, Richard 87th in 43.56, Tim 98th in 44.39 and Mike 259th in 53.30.  404 competitors took part – a good turn out aided by the fact that there were no other races in the area on that day.

Last but not least Ray Todd finished 115th in 29.54 at Chorley 4 mile event.
