Dave Neilands reports . . . .

Garstang Running Club members had little travelling to do with the Mid Lancs Cross Country at Lancaster and the Garstang 10k both being run over the same weekend. At Lancaster Mike Whyatt led the club home in 27th place followed by Tony Pritchard in 99th place, Geoff Lyons 125th, Phil Cornall 152nd, Richard Jones 158th, Craig Menzies 170th, Geoff Lund 195th and Phil Dixon 200th of the 213 mud spattered finishers.

Richard Jones and Geoff Lund were out again the following day for the Garstang High School 10K and for good measure as part of his London Marathon training Richard ran the 4 miles from home to the race. Geoff was not that daft! In a field of 445 finishers the club fielded 18 competitors with Graham Tagg leading the way in 26th place in 38.02 minutes followed by Greg Hunter 96th in 42.52, Al Hartley 99th in 43.01, Martin Knowles 106th in 43.25, Richard Jones 122nd in 44.35, Gary Heyworth 130th in 45.08, Malcolm Vinnicombe 147th and 3rd MV60 in 46.42, Geoff Lund 166th in 47.26, Peter “Formby” Gelderd 240th in 50.17, Phillipa Olive 240th in 50.25, Denise Hughes 277th, knocking three minutes off last years time in 52.40, Mike Hall 298th in 53.57, Edwina Parry 305th in 54.16, Julie Graham 313th in 54.38, Debi Spencer, knocking seven minutes off last years time – at this rate of improvement she will win the race in eight years time – 1 hour and 5 seconds, Marc Saysell 399th in 1.00.59, Heather Cronshaw 407th in 1.01.30 and Tracey Winter 422nd in 1.04.12 with the final competitor finishing the course in 1hour 23.58 minutes.

The two mile fun run had 113 competitors and eleven year old Rebecca Old out sprinted her Dad Dave to finish 20th in 15.49 minutes with Dad miles behind in 15.57. Other good performances came from eight year old Millie Parry who finished 64th in 20.22 seconds beating her six year old sister Ella by just three seconds. Much more importantly they improved last years time by about a minute – who knows how much they will improve in next years race!!
