Dave Neilands reports . . . .
Has Denise Hughes of Garstang Running Club convinced husband Brian that running is better than cycling? After his recent cycling “incidents” it is probably safer. They were first spied at the Grizedale 10 mile trail race in the Lake District where they finished in identical times of 1 hour 30.32 in 170th and 171st places respectively. Leading the club home in a field of 232 was Martyn Knowles 29th in 1.10.12, followed by Phil Dixon 126th in 1.23.58 and Philippa Olive 131st in 1.24.48.
Less than a week later Denise and Brian were racing again with 10 other club members at the Calder Vale 10 mile road race. There was perhaps an element of competition this time or perhaps they were not speaking as Denise beat Brian by 1 minute 20 seconds for 180th place in 1.31.15. Graham Tagg led the club home this time finishing 21st in1.05.00 followed by Tony Pritchard 44th in 1.08.37, Martyn Knowles 56th in 1.10.45, Phil Cornall 61st in 1.11.49, Gary Heyworth 78th in 1.14.56, Tim Warner 89th in 1.16.36, Nicola Clark 114th in 1.20.04, Julie Graham 175th in 1.29.24, Phil Dixon 182nd in 1.32.28 and Mike Hall 196th in 1.36.28. The last of the 219 finishers finished the tough hilly course in 1.59.06.
Further a field distant member Jane Holt completed her first ever half marathon at Stafford finishing a very creditable 655th of 1279 runners in 1.51.27. Talking of fields Pete Gelderd took part in the Tour of Fylde 6 mile cross country race finishing 26th of the 34 finishers in 49.59. Always looking to improve Pete felt he was running much better as he was able to keep “tabs” on the winner particularly when he was lapped by him for the third time!!
